Kolkata: The South 24 Parganas district administration launched a major demolition drive to dismantle the party office of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Amtala. The administrative action was initiated after investigations revealed that the multi-storey structure was built entirely without an approved building plan, in direct violation of statutory construction norms.
The enforcement operation commenced early in the morning as a heavy contingent of the West Bengal Police and Central Armed Police Forces cordoned off the entire avenue with guard rails to maintain law and order. By afternoon, three large bulldozers were brought to the site to systematically bring down the illegal structure, beginning with the front shed and expanding to the core framework. Fire and Emergency Services personnel remained on standby throughout the procedure as a safety precaution. During the evacuation of the premises, authorities recovered and logged several computers, laptops, and official document files from the interior offices.
Senior state government officials clarified that the demolition followed rigorous compliance with due administrative and legal processes. The action stemmed from complaints regarding unauthorised construction rather than political motivations. Records indicate that the land was purchased under the corporate name of ‘Leaps and Bounds’. The district administration had served statutory show-cause notices on June 30 and July 7, directing the concerned parties—including the MP’s father, Amit Banerjee, who is listed as a company director—to appear for a formal hearing on July 15. The decision to execute the demolition order was finalized only after the parties failed to respond to the multiple notices or present valid building sanctions.
The visibility of the bulldozers drew large crowds of local residents and opposition political workers to the Amtala-Baruipur Road. Local Bharatiya Janata Party workers and supporters gathered near the perimeter to celebrate the enforcement drive, chanting slogans in support of the administrative crackdown. Welcoming the development, BJP MLA Agnishwar Naskar stated that the law had finally caught up with an illegally erected facility that lacked basic municipal approvals. The building had long served as a key political hub for Banerjee within his Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
