CHENGALPATTU — Sangeetha Sornalingam, the wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, on Friday withdrew her divorce petition before the Family Court in Chengalpattu, ending the legal proceedings that had drawn widespread public attention. Sangeetha appeared before Judge Sujatha via video conferencing and confirmed that she did not wish to pursue the divorce proceedings initiated earlier this year.
After questioning her for approximately 15 minutes regarding the reasons for her submission, the court accepted the withdrawal petition and formally closed the case as uncontested. The single-judge bench permitted the withdrawal while granting liberty to institute fresh proceedings in the future if required. Counsel representing Vijay recorded no objection to the request.
Sangeetha had originally filed the divorce petition in February 2026 under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, citing grounds of mental cruelty, emotional neglect, and constructive desertion. The petition had also sought permanent alimony and permission to continue residing at their matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai. The court’s order disposes of the matter without any adjudication on the merits of the claims made in the original filing.
