Sri Muktsar Sahib: The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has initiated a suo motu inquiry following an alleged assault where two Dalit youth were bound with ropes and dragged through farming fields in Jhorad village, located within the Sri Muktsar Sahib district. The independent intervention by the state body was prompted by regional media reports detailing the severe mistreatment of members belonging to the Scheduled Castes community.
Confirming the development, the Chairperson of the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission, Jasvir Singh Garhi, stated that the panel took immediate note of the incident after reading about the brutality in a newspaper report. Recognizing the gravity of the human rights violation, the Commission bypassed standard filing procedures to start independent proceedings, demanding an immediate accountability statement from regional law enforcement.
Garhi has issued explicit instructions to the Senior Superintendent of Police of Sri Muktsar Sahib, routing the command through the Superintendent of Police Headquarters, to deliver a comprehensive factual account of the entire episode. The district police division has been given a strict deadline of June 9, 2026, to submit their investigative findings to the panel.
The Chairperson reiterated that the statutory body remains firmly dedicated to protecting the structural rights, legal safety, and human dignity of Scheduled Castes across the state. He emphasized that the Commission will thoroughly scrutinize the evidence and specific charges once the official police documents are handed over. Further legal steps and punitive actions against the perpetrators will be decided based on the conclusions of the upcoming police report.
