Prashant Kishor to Make Electoral Debut from Bankipur Assembly Bypoll in Bihar

Bankipur: The upcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar has transformed into a high-stakes political battleground following the Jan Suraaj Party’s announcement on Sunday naming its founder, Prashant Kishor, as the official candidate. The strategic decision was made public by Jan Suraaj state president Manoj Bharti following an intensive core committee meeting. The move marks a monumental milestone for the ace political strategist, who will be making his formal electoral debut in a constituency widely recognized as an impenetrable stronghold for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The high-profile urban seat in Patna was recently vacated after veteran BJP leader and national president Nitin Nabin resigned from the state legislative assembly following his election to the Rajya Sabha. The upcoming bypoll is scheduled to take place on July 30, with the official counting of votes slated for August 3. Aspiring candidates have until July 13 to submit their formal nomination papers. Kishor has deliberately framed this high-stakes contest as a crucial public referendum on the current ruling National Democratic Alliance government led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, setting the stage for an aggressive door-to-door ideological campaign.

While the BJP has confidently held the Bankipur seat uninterruptedly since 1995, the party is yet to formally declare its contender, though internal deliberations are reportedly revolving around prominent names like Ajay Alok, Neel Ratan Ghosh, and Ajeet Kumar Lali. Meanwhile, the opposition landscape is already shifting, as Janata Janshakti Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav previously entered the fray by nominating well-known social activist Veena Manvi. For Kishor, whose newly formed political outfit could not secure a single victory during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, this personal plunge into direct electoral politics represents a definitive, do-or-die litmus test for his party’s credibility and long-term viability in the state.
