PM Modi inaugurates ₹36,230 crore Ganga Expressway; 594-km project to serve as industrial backbone

Meerut: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will inaugurate the ambitious 594-km Ganga Expressway on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, alongside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Stretching from Meerut to Prayagraj, the six-lane access-controlled highway—expandable to eight lanes—is now the longest expressway in Uttar Pradesh. Built at a cost of ₹36,230 crore, the greenfield project is designed to drastically reduce travel time between the two cities from 12 hours to nearly six, effectively connecting 12 key districts including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh.

Beyond improving civil mobility, the expressway is a strategic asset for industrial growth and national security. The Uttar Pradesh government has already acquired 6,507 acres of land to develop 12 integrated manufacturing and logistics clusters along the route. Officials confirmed that the state has received over 900 investment proposals worth ₹47,000 crore, positioning the expressway as a high-speed industrial corridor capable of supporting a design speed of 120 kmph. Additionally, a 3.5 km airstrip has been constructed in Shahjahanpur to facilitate emergency landings for fighter aircraft, underscoring the project’s dual-use strategic importance.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the infrastructure will play a pivotal role in reducing logistics costs as a percentage of GDP and boosting the state’s burgeoning tourism sector. By linking western Uttar Pradesh with the eastern regions, the Ganga Expressway is expected to catalyze economic development in previously underserved districts.
