Prayagraj: A catastrophic weather event has claimed the lives of over one hundred people across Uttar Pradesh, following a relentless wave of heavy rain and violent storms that swept through the state on Wednesday. The severe atmospheric disturbance has left a trail of destruction, uprooting trees, toppling electric poles, and causing extensive damage to residential properties and public infrastructure. Emergency response teams are currently working to restore power and clear debris as the full scale of the disaster continues to unfold across more than thirty districts, marking one of the most intense meteorological events in the province this year.
Prayagraj emerged as the hardest-hit region, recording twenty-one fatalities, while Bhadohi followed closely with eighteen reported deaths. The high casualty figures were also mirrored in Mirzapur and Fatehpur, which saw fifteen and ten deaths respectively. Other districts across the state, including Unnao, Badaun, Pratapgarh, and Bareilly, reported several fatalities as the gale-force winds and torrential downpours caught many residents off guard. Even in areas with lower death tolls, such as Sitapur, Raebareli, and Chandauli, the impact of the storm has been profound, leaving local communities in a state of shock as they begin the difficult task of assessing the damage.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. In a decisive administrative response, the Chief Minister has ordered the immediate dispersal of financial assistance to the victims’ next of kin, mandating that the compensation be processed within twenty-four hours. District magistrates have been directed to conduct thorough inspections and expedite the assessment of crop and property damage to ensure that affected farmers and homeowners receive the necessary support to begin the recovery process without delay.
The state’s electrical grid has faced significant disruptions, with hundreds of kilometres of power lines brought down by falling trees and high-speed winds. Local authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious as the weather department continues to monitor the situation for potential after-effects. As the cleanup operations continue, the focus remains on providing medical aid to the injured and restoring essential services to the millions of residents impacted by this sudden and deadly escalation of the summer storm season.
