Kolkata: The Indian Navy’s stealth guided-missile destroyer INS Kolkata executed a swift tactical intervention in the Western Indian Ocean to neutralise a looming piracy threat targeting a commercial vessel. Naval headquarters confirmed that the warship was diverted from its standard maritime patrol route immediately after receiving distress signals regarding suspicious pirate movements close to the merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1. Moving at maximum speed, the destroyer arrived at the coordinates to establish a defensive screen around the vulnerable commercial carrier.
The rapid deployment and presence of the front-line Indian warship successfully deterred the armed actors, preventing a potential boarding attempt and ensuring the complete safety of the merchant vessel and its international crew. Following the secure interception, the technical and security teams of INS Kolkata closely monitored the transit corridor to allow MV Mashallah 1 to continue its passage through the high-risk shipping lanes without further disruption. This successful deterrence operation forms part of the Indian Navy’s ongoing commitment under Operation Sankalp, aimed at maintaining stable trade routes and protecting global seafarers from escalating maritime security challenges in the region.
