New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that there are currently no reported or confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease within India. This announcement comes amid escalating global concern following the World Health Organization declaring the recent outbreak in Central Africa a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda recently convened a high-level meeting to thoroughly assess the country’s readiness, reassuring the public that the domestic risk remains minimal while emphasizing that the governmental machinery is staying fully alert and operational.
Precautionary frameworks have been significantly enhanced across all major entry points into the country. Strict screening and surveillance protocols are actively functioning at all airports, seaports, and land border crossings to track and identify any incoming travellers exhibiting unexplained febrile illnesses. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and airport health organizations have received explicit instructions to maintain heightened vigilance, ensuring the immediate isolation and management of any suspected cases in pre-designated zones.
The current international outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus strain, which is spreading through parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Because there are currently no approved vaccines or specific therapeutic treatments targeted directly at this particular strain, the Government of India has proactively issued a travel advisory. Citizens are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan until the regional situation stabilizes.
On the diagnostic front, the National Institute of Virology in Pune has been designated as the central nodal testing centre for analyzing suspected samples. The Health Ministry is also collaborating with the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Centre for Disease Control to expand laboratory diagnostic capacities in a phased manner across additional facilities. Health officials have urged citizens to maintain calm and avoid sharing unverified information, reaffirming that the national healthcare infrastructure remains robustly prepared.
