New Delhi: India and New Zealand are scheduled to formalize a landmark Free Trade Agreement on April 27, 2026, marking the conclusion of a negotiation process that was first announced late last year. The signing ceremony is set to take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, in attendance. This strategic partnership is designed to double bilateral trade between the two nations to 5 billion dollars within the next five years, providing a significant boost to Indian exporters currently navigating global economic volatility and regional crises.

Under the terms of the pact, New Zealand has committed to investing 20 billion dollars into the Indian economy over the next 15 years, targeting key sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, innovation, and job creation. Indian firms will gain duty-free access to the New Zealand market, a move expected to particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises. While the deal eliminates or reduces tariffs on approximately 95 per cent of New Zealand’s exports—including wool, coal, and timber—India has successfully maintained protections for its domestic industries. Notably, New Delhi made no concessions regarding the import of dairy products, sugar, onions, and edible oils, ensuring that Indian farmers remain shielded from international competition in these sensitive areas.

A major highlight of the agreement for India is the enhanced mobility for its skilled workforce. New Zealand has agreed to provide a dedicated pathway for 5,000 temporary employment visas annually for Indian professionals. This quota includes practitioners in high-demand fields like IT, engineering, healthcare, and education, as well as specialized roles for yoga instructors, AYUSH practitioners, and Indian chefs. This initiative is expected to strengthen service trade and foster deeper professional ties between the two countries, allowing Indian experts to stay for up to three years under the new visa category.

The pharmaceutical and medical device industries in India are also set to receive a substantial lift through streamlined regulatory processes. New Zealand will now accept inspection reports from comparable international regulators, such as the US FDA and the UK’s MHRA, which will reduce duplicative inspections and speed up product approvals for Indian exporters. Furthermore, the pact includes a unique Agri-Technology Action Plan where New Zealand will share expertise in orchard management and post-harvest practices for kiwifruit and apples. This cooperation aims to help Indian growers improve productivity and fruit quality through the establishment of dedicated centres of excellence.

With the signing of this agreement, the Indian government continues its aggressive pursuit of trade liberalization, having recently implemented or signed deals with the UAE, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Notably, India has now secured trade partnerships with three members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance—Australia, the UK, and now New Zealand—while negotiations remain active with Canada and the United States. In 2024, the total trade in goods and services between India and New Zealand reached approximately 2.4 billion dollars, a figure this new agreement seeks to surpass rapidly as bilateral economic integration deepens.
