New Delhi: India and Austria significantly bolstered their bilateral ties on Thursday, April 16, 2026, concluding 15 major outcomes during the historic four-day visit of Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker. This visit, the first by an Austrian Chancellor to India in four decades, featured wide-ranging discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital. The partnership focused on a future-ready agenda spanning defence, technology, trade, and innovation, while specifically addressing the growing global threat of terrorism and radicalization.
A primary pillar of the discussions was a joint commitment to combat international terrorism. In a special media briefing, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George noted that both leaders unequivocally condemned the Pahalgam terror attack of 2025 and the subsequent security incident near the Red Fort. To formalize this cooperation, both nations signed a Letter of Intent to establish a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism. This platform is designed to facilitate information sharing, enhance capacity building, and disrupt terror financing networks in alignment with United Nations and Financial Action Task Force standards.
Economic and cultural cooperation also saw significant breakthroughs with the announcement of a Fast Track Mechanism aimed at resolving investor concerns and improving the ease of doing business for Indian and Austrian firms. Additionally, an Agreement on Audiovisual Co-production was signed to foster collaboration between the vibrant film industries of both countries. These outcomes, set against the backdrop of the broader India-EU Free Trade Agreement, signify a strategic shift toward an innovation-driven partnership that prioritizes regional security and economic growth.
