Mumbai: Unidentified assailants opened fire outside the residence of noted Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty in Mumbai’s upscale Juhu area early Saturday, triggering fresh concerns over the safety of celebrities in the city, police officials said.
According to Mumbai Police, the incident took place around 3 am when the attackers fired four rounds before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported in the incident. Police and forensic teams reached the spot shortly after and began collecting physical and technical evidence.
Rohit Shetty lives in a prominent Juhu neighbourhood that houses several film personalities. Following the incident, security arrangements in the area were significantly tightened as a precautionary measure.
Senior police officials said CCTV footage from nearby buildings and roads is being examined to trace the movement of the suspects. “At this stage, the motive behind the firing is not clear. No individual or group has claimed responsibility so far,” an official said.
Pattern of threats against celebrities
The firing incident comes amid a series of attacks and threats involving high-profile personalities. Last year, comedian and actor Kapil Sharma’s café in Canada was targeted in three separate firing incidents between July and October. Those attacks were later claimed by the Lawrence gang, which had also issued threats to Sharma.
In another case, Bollywood actor Salman Khan received a death threat on April 14, 2025. A WhatsApp message sent to the Worli Transport Department warned of blowing up his vehicle and attacking him at his residence. Worli Police registered a case under Sections 351(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.
Earlier, on April 14, 2024, shots were fired outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Bandra. That incident was also linked to the Lawrence gang, with police arresting seven accused, one of whom later died by suicide.
Investigators are now examining whether the firing outside Rohit Shetty’s house has any linkage with earlier attacks or organised crime networks. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
