Thissur: A massive fire broke out at the two-wheeler parking area of a railway station on Sunday morning, reducing hundreds of parked vehicles to ashes, according to fire and rescue service officials.

The incident occurred at a paid parking shed around 6.30 am. Fire officials said they received a distress call nearly 15 minutes later and rushed teams to the spot. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have started after a live electric line snapped and fell onto a parked two-wheeler that was covered, triggering the blaze.

Officials estimated that nearly 400 two-wheelers were parked inside the shed at the time of the incident, with most of them completely gutted before the fire could be brought under control. Thick smoke and flames quickly engulfed the tin-roofed structure, causing extensive damage to the parking facility as well.

Three fire tenders were pressed into service, and firefighters managed to douse the flames by around 7.45 am. Authorities said timely action helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby railway platforms, averting a potentially larger disaster.

Apart from the loss of vehicles, the entire shed, which was constructed with tin sheets, was severely damaged in the incident. No injuries were reported.

Police and railway officials have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and to assess the extent of losses.
