Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress party is poised to finalise the name of the next Kerala Chief Minister this Thursday as central observers arrive in Thiruvananthapuram to deliberate with the newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly. Following a resounding victory for the United Democratic Front, which secured 102 seats in the recent elections, the focus has shifted to the internal leadership race. Senior leaders Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik have been tasked by the party high command to conduct individual consultations with the MLAs and submit a comprehensive report that will determine the state’s executive head.
The leadership contest has effectively narrowed down to a choice between VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, both of whom have significant backing within different factions of the party. Supporters of Chennithala emphasize his extensive organisational experience and his role as the chairperson of the UDF campaign committee. They argue that his long-standing loyalty and seniority make him the natural choice to lead the new government. Chennithala himself has attributed the alliance’s success to the strategic guidance of the national leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and the Gandhi family, noting that the party’s core promises resonated deeply with the electorate.
Conversely, the camp supporting VD Satheesan highlights his performance as the public face of the opposition over the last several years. His backers contend that he was instrumental in the alliance’s revival after its 2021 setback and led the ground-level campaign that secured the current mandate. While Satheesan has officially stated that he will abide by any decision made by the high command, his visibility and outreach are being projected as vital assets for the future of the administration. Interestingly, both primary contenders hail from the Nair community, a factor that is being closely weighed within the party’s social and demographic calculations.
Adding another dimension to the deliberations is the mention of KC Venugopal, a prominent Lok Sabha Member of Parliament. Although he did not contest the assembly polls, some party sections and groups of concerned citizens have suggested his name for the top post, sparking a broader debate about leadership responsibility and public mandate. The final decision, expected to be announced later today or early tomorrow, remains in the hands of the Congress high command in New Delhi. The incoming Chief Minister will face the immediate task of implementing the UDF’s election pledges and managing the complex political landscape of Kerala following this decisive shift in power.
