Assam: The counting of votes in Assam has begun to paint a clear picture of the state’s political direction, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moving steadily toward a commanding position in the 2026 Assembly elections. Early trends indicate that the party is approaching the 100-seat mark in the 126-member Assembly, suggesting a decisive edge over its competitors.
Vote counting is underway at 40 centres spread across all 35 districts of the state. While most districts have a single counting location, arrangements differ in a few areas. Nagaon district is operating three counting centres, whereas Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat each have two centres to manage the process efficiently.
The elections, conducted in a single phase on April 9, recorded an impressive voter turnout of 85.96 percent among more than 2.5 crore registered voters—one of the highest participation rates in the state’s electoral history. The robust turnout is being seen as a reflection of heightened political engagement among citizens.
Initial trends also show that several prominent leaders from the outgoing BJP-led government are maintaining comfortable leads in their respective constituencies. Among them, Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad and the state’s Agriculture Minister, is ahead in the Bokakhat seat. He has secured a lead of over 3,000 votes against his nearest rival from the Raijor Dal after the first round of counting.
In a closely watched contest, senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is trailing in the Jorhat constituency, adding to the challenges faced by the opposition camp as the counting progresses.
With trends continuing to favour the BJP and its allies, the possibility of a renewed and stronger mandate appears increasingly likely. However, the final outcome will only be confirmed once counting across all rounds is completed, determining whether the early lead translates into a decisive electoral victory.
