Guwahati: Zubeen Garg’s cousin and Assam Police DSP, Sandipan Garg, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last month, a senior official confirmed.
DSP Garg has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. This marks the fifth arrest in the ongoing investigation.
Earlier, North East India Festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two band members—Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta—had been taken into custody.
“Our team has arrested Sandipan Garg and is completing the necessary legal formalities. He will be presented in court, and we will seek police remand,” CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta told PTI. The DSP was present with the singer during the alleged drowning incident and had been interrogated multiple times over the past few days.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore during his visit to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival, organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company. The earlier four arrests in the case remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
