Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened significantly, with six more fatalities reported over the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll from this year’s floods to 95, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Rising water levels have also expanded the impact of the disaster, leaving more than 1.6 lakh people affected across 14 districts.

Officials said two people each lost their lives in Sivasagar and Biswanath, while one death each was reported from Golaghat and Morigaon after they were swept away by floodwaters.

Number of Affected Residents Rises Sharply

The flood-hit population has increased considerably since Tuesday, when around 1.22 lakh people across five districts were affected. The latest assessment shows that residents in Biswanath, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri are now battling the worsening flood situation.

Among the worst-affected districts, Sivasagar has reported over 57,000 affected residents, followed by Golaghat with around 34,000 and Jorhat with nearly 25,000.

Relief Operations Continue

To assist displaced families, the state administration has established 105 relief camps and distribution centres across six districts. At present, these facilities are sheltering 44,523 people.

During the last 24 hours, relief agencies distributed 528.44 quintals of rice, 126.72 quintals of pulses, 73.21 quintals of salt, and over 2,500 litres of mustard oil to affected families.

Villages, Crops and Infrastructure Suffer Heavy Damage

According to ASDMA, floodwaters have submerged 563 villages, while approximately 16,952 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged, dealing a major blow to farmers.

The floods have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure in several districts, disrupting transport and essential services.

Authorities further reported that the Dhansiri River is flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh, raising concerns about additional flooding if water levels continue to rise.

Livestock Also Hit Hard

The disaster has severely impacted livestock across the state. Officials said 35,025 domestic animals and poultry have been affected by the floods, while another 8,529 animals and birds have reportedly been washed away.

The administration continues to monitor the evolving situation as rescue, relief and restoration efforts remain underway in the flood-affected regions.
