Rajkot: A 25-year-old intern doctor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot tragically died by suicide on Saturday morning. The deceased, identified as Ratankumar Meghwal, left behind a note alleging that he had been subjected to physical assault by his classmates. Police discovered his body on the railway tracks between Ghanteshwar and Para Pipaliya, situated on the outskirts of the city.

The Gandhigram police were alerted to the incident at approximately 5:30 am. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that Meghwal had been struck by a train. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Rakesh Desai confirmed that several personal belongings, including a laptop, mobile phones, medical files, and his institutional ID card, were recovered near the site. Meghwal was a native of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and was completing his medical internship at the premier institute.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that this was not Meghwal’s first attempt to end his life. According to police records, he had attempted suicide at the exact same location on January 27. At that time, police intervened, rescued him, and facilitated his return to his family in Rajasthan. Despite that prior intervention, the underlying issues involving his peers reportedly persisted.

The local administration has completed the post-mortem examination, and Meghwal’s family has been notified and is currently travelling from Rajasthan to claim the body. While the police have registered a case and are reviewing the contents of the suicide note, the incident has raised serious concerns regarding the mental well-being and safety of medical students within elite institutions. Further investigation is expected to determine the identity of the classmates mentioned in the note.
