Mumbai: Actor Gajendra Chauhan, best known for his role as Yudhishthira in the television epic Mahabharat, was recently targeted by cyber fraudsters after clicking on a deceptive social media advertisement. Timely intervention by the Mumbai Police ensured that the defrauded money was recovered and returned to him, officials said on Saturday.
According to police officials from the Oshiwara police station, the incident occurred when Chauhan came across an advertisement on Facebook promoting dry fruits at attractive discounts. After clicking on the link to place an order, he was prompted to enter a one-time password sent to his mobile phone. Soon after submitting the OTP, he received an alert indicating that a large sum had been debited from his bank account.
Realising that he had been cheated, the actor immediately approached the Oshiwara police station and lodged a complaint. Police officers promptly examined his bank statements and traced the transaction trail. With the help of nodal officers from the concerned banks, the suspicious transfer was frozen before the money could be withdrawn.
The defrauded amount was subsequently credited back to Chauhan’s account. Officials said the actor later visited the police station to express his gratitude to the police personnel for their swift and effective action.
Police have registered a case in connection with the cyber fraud and are continuing their investigation to identify those behind the scam.
