New Delhi: The nation paused on Saturday to honour the memory of the security personnel who lost their lives in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan leading tributes.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister remembered the 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans who were killed in the suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. He said their courage, dedication and commitment to the nation continue to inspire millions of Indians. Modi added that the sacrifice of the fallen personnel remains deeply embedded in the country’s collective memory.

Vice President Radhakrishnan also paid homage, describing the loss as a defining moment in India’s fight against terrorism. He said the bravery and supreme sacrifice of the CRPF personnel will always be remembered and will motivate the nation to work towards a stronger and safer India.

The Pulwama attack took place on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a convoy carrying CRPF personnel along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The blast resulted in the deaths of 40 jawans and marked one of the deadliest attacks on Indian security forces in recent years.

In the days following the attack, India carried out an air operation targeting terror infrastructure across the Line of Control in what came to be known as the Balakot airstrike.

Each year, February 14 is observed as a solemn reminder of the sacrifice made by the CRPF personnel. Across the country, citizens, leaders and organisations pay their respects to the martyrs and reaffirm their commitment to national security and unity.
