South Auckland Nagar Kirtan Faces Haka Protest from Local Youth

South Auckland: A Nagar Kirtan procession in South Auckland faced unexpected opposition on Sunday when a group of local youth performed the traditional Haka dance to block its route.

The religious procession had begun at Gurdwara Nanaksar Thath Ishar Darbar, Manurewa, and was returning to the Gurdwara Sahib when around 30 to 35 local young people positioned themselves in front of the convoy. Holding placards stating “This is New Zealand, not India,” the protesters performed the Haka, a traditional Maori dance known for its vigorous and aggressive movements, often associated with ceremonial or war displays.

Police intervened to manage the situation, and after a brief standoff, the protesters stepped aside, allowing the Nagar Kirtan to safely return to the Gurdwara. Sikh community leaders were present throughout the event, with community representative Sunny Singh noting that the situation was handled “very carefully” to avoid escalation.

The Haka has previously been used as a form of protest in New Zealand, including an instance in Parliament where a female MP performed the dance to oppose a government bill, highlighting its cultural and symbolic significance in local demonstrations.

Authorities have confirmed that no injuries occurred and are reviewing the incident to ensure public safety during future religious and community events.
