Shimla: Clear skies and rising temperatures have taken over Himachal Pradesh as monsoon activity remains subdued across the hill state. Weather officials have predicted that the weak monsoon phase will continue for the next four days, with a fresh spell of heavy rainfall likely to begin from July 18.
Most parts of the state, including the capital Shimla, witnessed bright sunshine on Tuesday. The dry conditions over the past couple of days have pushed temperatures upward, particularly in the lower and plain areas, where residents are also experiencing increased humidity.
According to the Meteorological Department, a new Western Disturbance is expected to influence the region from the night of July 17. Under its impact, rainfall activity is likely to intensify from July 18, with several parts of Himachal Pradesh expected to receive heavy showers until July 23.
Officials said weather conditions will largely remain clear until July 17, with only isolated instances of light rain or drizzle possible in some areas. The reduction in rainfall activity is expected to result in a further rise in temperatures, with several locations likely to witness an increase of 2–3 degrees Celsius.
July rainfall remains above average
Despite the recent dry spell, Himachal Pradesh has received above-normal rainfall during July so far. Weather data shows the state recorded 125 mm of rain between July 1 and July 13, compared with the normal average of 94.5 mm for the period. This represents around 32 per cent more rainfall than usual.
However, rainfall distribution across districts has remained uneven. Kinnaur witnessed the highest surplus, recording around 151 per cent more rainfall than normal. Solan and Kullu also received significantly above-average rainfall, with excess rainfall levels of 115 per cent and 107 per cent respectively.
On the other hand, districts including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti and Mandi recorded rainfall below their normal levels during the same period.
Heavy rain warning issued for upcoming spell
With monsoon activity expected to strengthen from July 18, the Meteorological Department has advised residents, especially those living in landslide-prone and vulnerable areas, to remain alert. Tourists and travellers have also been advised to monitor weather updates before planning outdoor activities.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation as the upcoming rainfall spell could bring intense showers to several parts of the state after the current period of dry and sunny weather.
