Chandigarh, May 2, 2026: Punjab has set a new benchmark in tax revenue by recording its highest-ever monthly Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection since its inception. The announcement was made by Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who credited the achievement to efficient governance and strong enforcement measures under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The state recorded a Gross GST collection of ₹2,987.38 crore and a Net GST collection of ₹2,725.08 crore for April 2026. This reflects a remarkable year-on-year net growth of 70.70%, amounting to an increase of approximately ₹1,129 crore compared to April 2025.
Punjab Emerges as Fastest-Growing State in GST Revenue
According to Government of India data, Punjab has registered a 66% growth in post-settlement GST, with collections rising from ₹1,795 crore last year to ₹2,987 crore this year. This makes Punjab the top-performing state in GST growth across the country, significantly outperforming the national average and leading all North Indian states.
However, the Finance Minister clarified that part of the year-on-year surge is due to an abnormal Integrated GST (IGST) adjustment of ₹859 crore recorded in April 2025. After adjusting this factor, Punjab still recorded a stable growth of 12.57% in gross GST and 10.97% in net GST, indicating consistent and organic improvement in tax compliance.
Data-Driven Enforcement and Strict Action Against Tax Evasion
The strong GST performance has been attributed to intensified enforcement efforts and the strategic use of technology by the Excise and Taxation Department. The government has adopted a data-driven approach, combining analytics, intelligence-based inspections, and coordinated field operations to curb tax evasion.
As part of these efforts, penalties exceeding ₹175 crore have been imposed across the state. In a major crackdown targeting the iron and steel sector, authorities detained nearly 200 vehicles in a single day, marking one of the largest enforcement drives in recent times.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining a balance between strict enforcement and taxpayer facilitation. He stated that while action against tax evasion will continue with full force, compliant taxpayers will be supported through a transparent and efficient system.
Focus on Sustainable Revenue Growth and Economic Stability
The Punjab Government views this record GST collection as a reflection of improved economic activity, better compliance, and effective governance. The administration aims to further strengthen the revenue base through continued reforms, digital monitoring, and proactive enforcement.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Finance Minister said that Punjab will continue to build a robust, transparent, and growth-oriented taxation system, ensuring long-term fiscal stability for the state.
