Punjab Government Moves to Enhance Girl-Child Safety; Aims to Boost Gender Ratio by 2026

Chandigarh: To eradicate the evil practice of female foeticide in Punjab, the Bhagwant Maan government has taken a significant step. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh stated that Punjab no longer just seeks change but aspires to be the best. The government’s goal is to ensure that by 2026, Punjab’s sex ratio surpasses the national average.

The Maan government has issued strict orders to all health department employees to monitor every aspect from conception to childbirth. The aim is to prevent any attempt at sex determination or female foeticide. This move underscores the government’s strong commitment to the respect and equality of women.

During a workshop held in Chandigarh, Dr. Balbir Singh declared that preventing the birth of a girl-child is the greatest flaw in society. He clearly stated that a “zero-tolerance” policy for this crime will now be implemented in Punjab. This message is for health workers and the entire community: female foeticide will not be accepted under any circumstances.

The state’s health system has been further strengthened for this mission. Civil Surgeons, health officers, nurses, and especially ASHA workers will monitor every pregnant woman to ensure proper care and prevent any illegal activity. This surveillance will not only help prevent crime but also enhance women’s safety.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of the PC-PNDT Act (1994). This law was enacted to prevent the misuse of machines for sex determination. He noted that the law works effectively only when both the government and society collaborate for its implementation—and the Maan government is doing exactly that.

The government is not only enforcing strict measures but is also running awareness campaigns. Programs will be conducted across the state to foster respect for daughters and ensure everyone understands that girls and boys are equal. This is not just a governmental task but a campaign to transform society.

This initiative by the Punjab government will further elevate the state’s identity in the coming years—a Punjab where the birth of a daughter will be a joyous occasion, where women get equal opportunities, and where the government builds a safe and respectable future. This campaign will also set a good example for other states.
