Jalandhar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said making Punjab drug-free would be the central electoral issue for the BJP in the 2027 Assembly elections, as he addressed the concluding rally of the party’s 13-day Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra in Jalandhar.
Shah said that while Punjab has several key issues, including agriculture, industry, law and order and women’s safety, the BJP would primarily contest the upcoming election on the issue of eliminating the drug menace.
Amit Shah Sets December 31, 2029 Deadline
Shah pledged that if the BJP receives public support, Punjab would be freed from the illicit ‘chitta’ trade by December 31, 2029.
He appealed to the state’s mothers and youth to support the campaign against drugs, making the pledge at the rally held in Paragpur near Jalandhar.
The announcement puts the drug issue at the centre of the BJP’s campaign positioning ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Shah Targets AAP Over Drug Trade
During his address, Shah targeted the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, alleging that the synthetic drug trade had been allowed to flourish openly in the state.
The allegation forms part of the BJP’s broader political campaign to make the drug issue a key focus ahead of the Assembly polls. The AAP’s position and response to these allegations are separate from Shah’s claims.
BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra Covers 117 Seats
The BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra was launched from Pathankot on September 18 and travelled through all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab.
The campaign covered nearly 4,000 kilometres before reaching Jalandhar for its concluding rally addressed by Shah.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the BJP’s Jalandhar rally has placed the drug issue at the centre of its stated electoral campaign in Punjab.
