Chandigarh: A spell of intense heat has gripped Punjab and Chandigarh, with the weather department issuing a ‘yellow alert’ for a four-day period from April 21 to April 24, warning residents of rising temperatures and unusually warm nights.

According to meteorological officials, temperatures across the region have climbed above normal levels, with an increase of over 3°C compared to seasonal averages. At least 21 districts are currently recording temperatures above 35°C, indicating widespread heatwave-like conditions.

Bathinda emerged as the hottest location, with the mercury touching 41°C. Other major cities also reported high readings, including Ludhiana at 39.4°C, Patiala at 39.8°C, and Chandigarh at 38.1°C. Amritsar and Jalandhar recorded temperatures above 37°C, while several other districts continued to experience persistent heat throughout the day.

The impact is expected to be more severe in certain areas, with Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, and Patiala likely to witness heatwave conditions in isolated pockets. Officials said the heat will intensify from morning hours, peaking between noon and late afternoon.

Despite the soaring temperatures, no rainfall is expected in the coming days, which could further aggravate the situation. However, a western disturbance currently active over Jammu and Kashmir may influence weather patterns from April 23 onwards, potentially bringing some changes in the region.

In response to the rising heat, the Health Department has issued advisories urging people to take precautions. Residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, and follow recommended dietary practices to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Hospitals have also stepped up preparedness, setting up dedicated wards and ensuring round-the-clock medical staff availability to handle cases related to heat stress.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious as the heatwave conditions are expected to persist over the next few days, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures likely to remain elevated.
