AMRITSAR — Security agencies were placed on high alert at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport late Sunday evening after multiple unidentified drones were detected hovering in the operational zone. The incident unfolded around 10:00 PM when two to four suspicious unmanned aerial objects approached the terminal perimeter from the direction of nearby rural hamlets, lingering above the main runway and surrounding high-security areas for several minutes.
Upon detecting the aerial intrusion, Air Traffic Control issued an immediate security bulletin and halted approach procedures across the airfield. Precautionary protocols mobilised the Central Industrial Security Force, Punjab Police, and intelligence agencies to secure ground installations and initiate anti-drone countermeasures along the perimeter.
To safeguard passenger safety amid the airspace breach, aviation controllers diverted seven inbound domestic and international flights to neighbouring airports in Delhi and Chandigarh. The rerouted traffic included international services from Kuala Lumpur and Sharjah, alongside domestic arrivals originating from Mumbai and Delhi. Joint security forces have launched extensive search operations in the surrounding countryside to trace the launch points and operators behind the drone activity.
