Chandigarh: A wanted criminal from Haryana was apprehended after a brief exchange of fire with the Chandigarh Police in the early hours of the day. The encounter took place when a team from the Operations Cell intercepted the accused based on specific intelligence inputs
The accused, identified as Mukesh Golu, a resident of Gohana in Haryana, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the operation. He was immediately taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 16 for treatment and is currently under medical supervision.
Police officials said they had received information that the accused was entering Chandigarh with suspected criminal intent. Acting swiftly, teams were deployed and the area was cordoned off to prevent his escape.
The suspect was cornered near the rally ground in Sector 25. According to preliminary reports, he attempted to flee and opened fire on the police personnel. In response, the police retaliated, leading to a brief gunfight in which around five rounds were fired.
During the exchange, the accused was hit in the leg, after which he was overpowered and taken into custody. Police recovered a firearm from his possession along with several bullet casings from the spot.
Officials confirmed that the accused was already wanted in connection with previous criminal cases and had been on the radar of law enforcement agencies.
Further investigation is underway to determine his plans and any possible links to other criminal activities.
