New Delhi: Team India captain Shubman Gill on Saturday became the fifth player to register the most centuries in World Test Championship (WTC) history, scoring an unbeaten 129 on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
Gill’s innings came off 196 balls, including 16 boundaries and two sixes, taking his WTC tally to 2,826 runs in 39 matches at an average of 43.47 and a strike rate of 61.36. With this century, he now has 10 WTC hundreds, surpassing former India captain Rohit Sharma, who had nine centuries. His highest WTC score remains 269, achieved earlier this year against England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
Gill joins an elite list of top century-makers in WTC history, alongside Joe Root (21), Steve Smith (13), Kane Williamson (11), and Marnus Labuschagne (11). He has also become the 10th-highest run-getter in the tournament, following players like Root, Smith, Labuschagne, England captain Ben Stokes, and Australian opener Travis Head.
This century marks the fifth by an India captain in a single calendar year, making Gill the second Indian captain to achieve this after Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, he joins a distinguished group of Indians with five or more Test centuries in a calendar year, which includes Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Gundappa Vishwanath, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli.
In the second session of the Test, Team India declared their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs, thanks to centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. In response, the West Indies opened with John Campbell and Tagnarine Chanderpaul, but lost their first wicket at 21 runs when left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Campbell, with the catch taken by Sai Sudarshan at short-leg.
By the end of the first session, West Indies were 26/1, and at Tea, they stood at 26/1 in 11 overs, with Chanderpaul on 13 and Alick Athanaze 2 not out**, trailing India by 492 runs.
Bowling figures for India in the second session included Jasprit Bumrah 0/10 in 4 overs, Mohammed Siraj 0/9 in 4 overs, Ravindra Jadeja 1/5 in 2 overs, and Kuldeep Yadav 0/2 in 1 over.
Gill’s innings not only consolidates India’s dominant position in the Test but also cements his place among the greats in WTC history.
