Jalandhar, Punjab: A barasingha (swamp deer) caused panic in Chhote Got village in Jalandhar on Saturday after wandering into residential areas. Villagers were startled upon spotting the wild animal, which began running and jumping across streets, sustaining several injuries in the process.

Residents tried to capture the deer using nets, but it kept moving from one lane to another. After about an hour of effort, villagers successfully trapped the barasingha and informed the police, who in turn contacted the Forest Department.

The forest team arrived at the scene, rescued the deer, and transported it to the forest department office for medical treatment. Once treated, the barasingha will be released back into a safe forest area in Hoshiarpur’s Chauhal region.

Incident Details:

The commotion began around noon when villagers noticed the deer roaming in the streets. People closed their doors and tried to secure the animal using nets. The barasingha sustained injuries during the capture due to its frantic movements.

Forest Department Precautions:

Forest officials warned residents to stay alert as wild animals often enter residential areas during winter in search of sunlight. Last year, around 70 wild animals were rescued in similar incidents across the region.

Previous Wildlife Sightings:

Jalandhar has witnessed such encounters before. About ten months ago, a sambar deer caused panic in Santokhpur area, damaging vehicles while trying to escape crowds before being rescued by the forest team.

Advice to Residents:

Forest officers urge villagers to report any wild animal sightings immediately to the authorities to ensure safe rescue and prevent injuries to both animals and people.
