New Delhi, October 1, 2025: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has served notices to 54 private universities across the country, including Azim Premji University in Bhopal and Amity University campuses in Patna, Ranchi, and Mohali, for failing to submit mandatory information as required under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956.
The commission had issued an order in June 2024 directing all universities to upload crucial institutional details on their official websites in a transparent and accessible manner. Universities were also instructed to submit the prescribed formats in soft copy, verified by the registrar, for inspection purposes. Despite repeated reminders, several institutions did not comply, prompting the UGC to categorize them as defaulters.
According to reports, Madhya Pradesh accounted for the highest number of defaulters, with 10 universities from the state on the list. Among the other institutions served notices are Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Visvavidyalaya in Assam, Sandip University in Bihar, Anjaneya University in Raipur, India International University of Legal Education and Research in Goa, Gandhinagar University in Gujarat, NIILM University in Haryana, Sri Jagadhguru Murugarajendra University in Karnataka, Alard University in Pune, Asian International University in Manipur, OPJS University in Rajasthan, multiple private universities in Sikkim, Techno India University in Tripura, FS University in Uttar Pradesh, Maya Devi University in Uttarakhand, and Swami Vivekananda University in West Bengal, among others.
The UGC has clarified that these institutions are required to comply at the earliest, failing which further action may be initiated as per the UGC Act. The step underscores the commission’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountability, transparency, and quality assurance in the functioning of higher education institutions across India.
