Gurugram: A tragic accident in the early hours of Saturday morning has left five young people dead and one critically injured, after a speeding Mahindra Thar SUV lost control, collided with a divider, and overturned near Jharsanda Chowk, close to Exit 9 on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.

The victims were reportedly returning from Delhi when the vehicle met with the fatal crash around 4:15 AM, according to Gurugram police. The Thar, bearing Uttar Pradesh registration UP 81 CS 2319, was carrying six passengers—three men and three women.

Victims Identified: UP and Haryana Residents Among Dead

Among the deceased is Pratishtha Mishra (25), daughter of Rae Bareli judge Chandramani Mishra. Others who lost their lives in the incident include:

  • Aditya Pratap Singh (30) – Resident of Agra, Uttar Pradesh

  • Lavnay (26) – Also from Agra

  • Soni – Details yet to be confirmed

  • Gautam (31) – Originally from Sonipat, Haryana, residing in Greater Noida

The sole survivor, identified as Kapil Sharma (28) from Bulandshahr, is currently undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital, where his condition is reported as critical.

Scene of the Accident: Speed Suspected as Main Cause

Initial investigation suggests that the vehicle was traveling at high speed when it attempted to descend from the expressway near Exit 9. The driver is believed to have lost control, causing the SUV to strike the central divider and overturn multiple times.

According to DCP (Traffic) Dr. Rajesh Mohan, tire marks at the crash site indicate excessive speed. Police officials, who responded quickly after being alerted by bystanders, found the vehicle severely damaged with passengers trapped inside. Locals and police jointly worked to extract the victims from the wreckage.

Club Bands Raise Questions

All five deceased were found wearing club entry wristbands, prompting speculation that they may have been returning from a late-night party. However, police have stated that no confirmation has been made regarding alcohol consumption or the exact nature of their activities before the crash.

“The presence of club bands suggests they may have visited a nightlife venue, but we are examining all angles. Forensic tests and CCTV footage will provide more clarity,” said a police official on site.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from along the expressway and nearby areas. Postmortem examinations are being conducted to determine if substance use was involved.

DCP Rajesh Mohan emphasized the dangers of speeding, especially in the early morning hours when visibility and road traction can be low.

“This is a tragic example of how high speed can turn deadly. We’re continuing to collect evidence and will issue further details once the investigation progresses,” he said.
