Nabha: A rare and unannounced visit by Dera Beas chief Gurinder Singh Dhillon to Nabha Central Jail on Tuesday has stirred significant buzz across Punjab’s political and religious spheres. The spiritual leader met Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who is currently behind bars in connection with a high-profile narcotics case.
Security was visibly heightened around the jail complex during the visit. According to sources, Dhillon spent nearly half an hour in a private meeting with Majithia. While the exact nature of their conversation has not been disclosed, the meeting has fueled widespread speculation, especially given the restrictions imposed on other visitors.
Following his meeting, the Dera head briefly addressed followers who had gathered near the jail, though he refrained from commenting on the purpose of his visit. He later visited Hira Mahal, the historic residence of Nabha’s former royal family, where he interacted with descendants and other members of the household.
Interestingly, the jail administration has in recent weeks denied entry to several senior SAD leaders wishing to meet Majithia. Politicians such as Daljit Singh Cheema, Sikander Singh Maluka, Mahesh Inder Grewal, and Virsa Singh Valtoha were turned away, citing protocols that limit jail visits primarily to family members.
Majithia, a prominent face in Punjab politics and a former minister, was arrested in connection with drug trafficking allegations and has remained in judicial custody as the case proceeds through the legal system.
The high-profile visit by the Dera Beas chief — who rarely makes public appearances of this nature — has now triggered questions about its implications, both politically and socially. While neither side has offered details, the development is likely to remain a talking point in Punjab’s political discourse in the coming days.
