Amritsar: Punjab Police have implemented stringent security measures across Amritsar ahead of United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor’s scheduled visit to Sri Harmandir Sahib on Monday. The high-profile diplomatic visit to the premier Sikh shrine has prompted local authorities to fortify key transit corridors and religious premises to ensure complete order throughout his itinerary.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, RPS Sandhu, confirmed that comprehensive security arrangements are fully operational to manage every contingency. Approximately 150 police personnel, operating in both standard uniforms and plain clothes, have been stationed across the inner complex and surrounding perimeters of the shrine. Addressing recent concerns regarding unauthorized wall graffiti reported in parts of the city prior to the visit, senior officials dismissed any disruption by mischievous elements, reiterating that surveillance teams and security rings remain on high alert.
Beyond paying obeisance at the Golden Temple, the American envoy’s day-long engagement in the historic city includes stops at other significant cultural landmarks, including the Partition Museum and Jallianwala Bagh, before he departs for New Delhi. Local traffic management blueprints and security cordons have been synchronized across each destination to facilitate seamless movement.
Revered globally as Sri Darbar Sahib, the Golden Temple stands as a central spiritual sanctuary representing human brotherhood, humility, and universal equality. Excavation of the holy Amrit Sarovar was initiated in 1577 by Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji under the counsel of Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji, while Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji subsequently brick-lined the sarovar in 1588 and commenced the temple’s construction. The sacred scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, was ceremonially installed within the sanctum in August 1604, with Baba Budha Ji serving as the first head priest. Built at a level deliberately lower than the surrounding terrain and featuring four open entrances facing cardinal directions, the architectural design reflects egalitarian values, welcoming visitors of all backgrounds and faiths.
