Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced ₹2 crore in financial assistance for the bereaved family of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjeet Singh, who was shot dead while performing active duty in Amritsar early Friday. The overall compensation includes a state government ex-gratia grant of ₹1 crore alongside an additional ₹1 crore insurance payout provided through HDFC Bank.
The senior police official, posted under the Gate Hakima police station, was on night patrol near the grain market around 2:30 AM when unidentified assailants opened fire, striking him three times. Although emergency responders rushed him to a nearby private hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Paying homage to the fallen officer, Chief Minister Mann affirmed that the state administration stands firmly with the bereaved family during this tragic period. He highlighted that the officer’s dedication and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty will always be remembered as an enduring inspiration for the entire police force.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the slain assistant sub-inspector will be accorded full police honours. A dedicated investigative team has launched a high-priority probe, reviewing local surveillance footage and regional forensic evidence to trace and capture the perpetrators.
