New Delhi: A scale-back of Chinese military forces along the Line of Actual Control represents a cautious step forward rather than a definitive resolution in the long journey toward normalcy between New Delhi and Beijing. According to the Ministry of Defence’s annual report for 2025–26, the People’s Liberation Army scaled back its deployments opposite India’s northern borders throughout 2025. However, defence officials and strategic analysts emphasize that this drawdown constitutes only a partial pull-back of the surge forces deployed during the military standoff that erupted in May 2020.
Security experts frame the broader border resolution around a strict three-stage roadmap: disengagement, de-escalation, and de-induction. While the initial phase of disengagement—physically separating opposing troops at contentious friction points to avert accidental clashes—was largely completed in late 2024, current movements fall under the initial margins of de-escalation. Crucially, the final and most decisive phase of de-induction, which requires both sides to pull back reserve divisions, heavy artillery, and armoured units back to their peacetime garrisons, has yet to materialize.
Despite the recent reductions, China maintains an estimated frontline posture of roughly 50,000 troops stationed within 20 to 25 kilometres of Indian positions, heavily reinforced by missile systems, air-defence batteries, and armour. An additional 50,000 Chinese personnel remain positioned across rotational training sectors on the Tibetan plateau. Given that the flat terrain of the Tibetan plateau allows Beijing to mobilize reserve formations far more rapidly than India can across rugged Himalayan approaches, Indian military planners remain vigilant and continue to match opposing strength directly across forward sectors.
The Ministry of Defence noted that the Indian Army remains robustly positioned and prepared for any operational contingency along the contested frontier. While sustained diplomatic engagement, Corps Commander meetings, and dialogue between Special Representatives have fostered relative stability, complete de-escalation will hinge on verifiable, permanent withdrawals rather than rotational troop adjustments.
