Ferozepur: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was killed and another person seriously injured after two masked men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire at a group in Mamdot town of Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh. Harpreet Singh, who was also injured in the firing, was rushed to hospital and later referred to another medical facility after his condition was described as critical.

According to preliminary information, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and targeted people who were travelling in a car and on another motorcycle. The attackers reportedly fired several rounds before fleeing the spot.

Officials at the Civil Hospital said two injured persons were brought to the facility at around 8 am. Gurpreet Singh had already died from his injuries by the time he reached the hospital, while Harpreet Singh required further medical treatment because of the severity of his condition.

Police examine CCTV footage

Following the incident, Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh reached the spot and reviewed the ongoing investigation. Police teams have begun examining CCTV recordings from the surrounding area in an attempt to establish the sequence of events and trace the attackers.

The SSP said investigators have identified the alleged accused but declined to provide further details at this stage, citing the ongoing probe.

Election rivalry angle under investigation

Preliminary findings point towards a possible dispute linked to election-related rivalry, according to the SSP. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and questioning people who may have information about the incident.

Officials have not yet disclosed the precise motive or circumstances that led to the shooting. The investigation is continuing as police gather CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the role of those allegedly involved.

The killing has raised concerns in the area, while police teams remain engaged in efforts to piece together the events leading up to the fatal firing.
