Chandigarh: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha unanimously passed a resolution on Monday seeking to hold the Union Government accountable for recurring examination scandals, paper leaks, and widespread institutional failures impacting students and job seekers across the country. Moved by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during the Monsoon Session, the resolution expressed deep concern over how widespread irregularities in major competitive tests have undermined public trust and compromised the career prospects of young aspirants.
Presenting the resolution before the House, Cheema highlighted the systemic flaws, digital remote-access breaches, and recruitment irregularities reported nationwide over the past decade. The motion called for an immediate overhaul and decentralization of central testing bodies, including the National Testing Agency, alongside strict legal action against organized paper leak syndicates. It further demanded the unconditional withdrawal of all criminal cases registered against students who participated in peaceful demonstrations.
The Finance Minister strongly condemned the BJP-led Union Government for deploying excessive force against peaceful student demonstrations. He pointed to instances where law enforcement agencies utilized tear gas, pellet guns, and severe measures against young demonstrators protesting in national locations such as Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Cheema contrasted these national failures with the state government’s performance, emphasizing that the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led administration has delivered nearly 70,000 public sector jobs purely on merit while restoring essential post-matric scholarship programmes for more than 50,000 Scheduled Caste students.
Following discussions in the House, the assembly resolved to formally transmit copies of the resolution to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Union Ministry of Education for urgent consideration. Several prominent leaders, including Cabinet Ministers Dr. Balbir Singh and Aman Arora, alongside various legislative members, spoke in firm support of the motion before it received unanimous approval from the assembly floor.
