New Delhi: Environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday, days after ending his 26-day hunger strike. He announced that he will visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to the mountains.
Sharing the update on social media, Wangchuk wrote, “And finally… I’m being discharged from the hospital. Will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains.”
He also expressed gratitude to the doctors, hospital staff and everyone who supported him during his treatment and recovery.
“A big thank you to the wonderful team of doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon,” Wangchuk said.
The environmentalist had been admitted to Medanta after ending his 26-day hunger strike, which was launched to demand reforms in the education system and accountability over examination paper leaks. His fast concluded following discussions with the Centre and assurances on several key issues, including the treatment of peaceful protesters and steps to strengthen anti-paper leak measures.
Wangchuk’s decision to visit Rajghat before returning to Ladakh comes as a symbolic tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and peaceful protest, which he has often cited during his public campaigns.
