Noida: A six-year-old boy lost his life after accidentally falling into a water-filled pit dug for boring work inside a residential colony in Greater Noida, police said. The tragic incident has raised concerns over safety measures at construction sites located near residential areas.
According to police, the accident occurred on Saturday evening in Kaladham Colony, where the child was playing with other children near the excavation site around 7 p.m. During the play, he reportedly slipped and fell into the pit, which had accumulated water.
Hearing the commotion, family members and local residents rushed to the spot and managed to pull the child out of the pit. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him brought dead.
Police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident and initiated legal formalities. Following the completion of the inquest proceedings, the child’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
During the probe, authorities found that the pit had been dug as part of ongoing boring work inside the colony. Alleging negligence in maintaining safety at the site, police arrested the contractor associated with the project on Sunday.
Investigators are examining whether adequate precautionary measures, such as barricading the excavation area or placing warning signs, had been put in place to prevent such accidents.
Officials said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of safety norms at construction and excavation sites, particularly in residential localities where children frequently play.
