New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 Kargil War and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to building a secure, self-reliant and progressive India during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat. His address touched upon a wide range of subjects, including national security, water conservation, scientific achievements, sports, environmental protection, traditional crafts and public participation.
Recalling the significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Prime Minister described July 26 as a day etched in the nation’s memory, honouring the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces. He said the bravery displayed by Indian soldiers under the most challenging conditions continues to inspire generations and called upon citizens to remember their contribution with gratitude.
Highlighting efforts to keep the legacy of the Kargil heroes alive, the Prime Minister spoke about the ongoing ‘Shaurya Vijay Yatra’, a motorcycle rally that began from the National War Memorial in New Delhi and is set to culminate at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras. He said the initiative reflects the nation’s collective salute to its brave soldiers.
Turning to defence preparedness, PM Modi underlined India’s growing capabilities in indigenous military manufacturing. He referred to the induction of INS Mahendragiri, a warship built largely with indigenous components, as a reflection of the country’s expanding defence ecosystem under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He also noted the successful tests of the Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket and the Kusha missile, crediting scientists and engineers for strengthening India’s strategic capabilities.
The Prime Minister also pointed to increasing international confidence in India’s defence sector, mentioning that agreements related to the BrahMos and Astra missile systems were concluded during his recent visit to Indonesia, further enhancing India’s defence partnerships abroad.
On environmental conservation, PM Modi renewed his appeal for active participation in the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign. He said communities across the country have undertaken efforts such as reviving ponds, restoring traditional water bodies, improving groundwater recharge and promoting rainwater harvesting. He cited examples from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, where local initiatives have significantly strengthened water conservation efforts.
Congratulating Indian athletes on their recent achievements, the Prime Minister lauded P.V. Sindhu for becoming the first Indian to win the Japan Open badminton title. He also praised the Indian women’s cricket team for registering its maiden Test victory at Lord’s, describing the triumph as a historic moment for Indian sports. He extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games.
Emphasising India’s growing presence in science and technology, PM Modi described the successful launch of Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed rocket, as a landmark achievement for the Indian space sector. He said opening the sector to private participation has created new opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs.
The Prime Minister also congratulated Indian students for their impressive performance at international Science Olympiads, where participants secured multiple gold and silver medals in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. He said the achievements reflect the country’s emerging scientific talent and growing interest in research and innovation.
The address also focused on preserving India’s cultural and traditional heritage. PM Modi highlighted efforts to revive Kashmir’s traditional Vagu mat weaving, promoted locally produced herbal tea prepared by women’s self-help groups in Uttar Pradesh, encouraged citizens to support Khadi, handloom and handicrafts, and urged people to embrace the Vocal for Local movement by choosing indigenous products.
On environmental protection, he praised the enthusiastic response to the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, noting that large-scale plantation drives in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh had set new benchmarks in public participation. He also highlighted wildlife conservation efforts, including the return of the Indian Grey Hornbill to Gujarat’s Gir forests after several decades.
The Prime Minister further commended initiatives that convert plastic waste into useful public infrastructure, citing a project in Bihar where discarded single-use plastic is being recycled to manufacture benches for schools and public spaces.
Ahead of the festive season, PM Modi appealed to citizens to opt for eco-friendly clay idols during Ganesh Chaturthi and reiterated the importance of supporting Indian artisans by purchasing locally made handloom and handicraft products.
The address concluded with tributes to former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary and greetings on the occasion of Guru Purnima. As India prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the Prime Minister urged citizens to participate enthusiastically in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign by hoisting the national flag with dignity and respect. He also invited people to share ideas and suggestions for the celebrations through the MyGov platform.
The 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat reflected the government’s continued emphasis on national security, innovation, environmental responsibility, cultural preservation and public participation as key pillars of India’s development journey.
