Chandigarh: Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) national convenor and Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Sidhupur president, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, launched a sharp critique against the central government on Friday, accusing the administration of weakening democratic values. Dallewal alleged that the government is systematically employing law enforcement to dismantle non-violent, Gandhian-style demonstrations while simultaneously interfering with judicial integrity to shield key political figures. He maintained that under the current political climate, participating in peaceful public fasts to protect the future of the nation’s youth is being treated as a criminal offense.
The farm union leader strongly condemned the recent forced eviction of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest arena by the Delhi Police. Wangchuk had been conducting an indefinite hunger strike for three weeks to demand accountability and the resignation of the Union Education Minister following extensive nationwide competitive exam paper leak scandals. Dallewal noted that these recurring academic failures have destroyed the prospects of millions of students and driven several youths to suicide across the country. He stated that while the Prime Minister promotes India globally as a premier democracy, the act of using police forces to physically lift a peaceful protester reveals a deep disregard for constitutional guarantees regarding the fundamental right to assemble against state injustice.
Dallewal emphasized that Wangchuk’s demands were entirely public-spirited and focused on eliminating institutional corruption rather than seeking personal or financial concessions. He revealed that the sudden police operation at Jantar Mantar was driven by administrative panic, as a delegation of SKM (Non-Political) leaders had planned to visit the site to express formal solidarity ahead of a scheduled public march to Parliament. Drawing a parallel to the Lakhimpur Kheri case, where protesting farmers were mowed down by an associate vehicle of a political leader, Dallewal expressed severe outrage over recent reports that the Uttar Pradesh Police prematurely claimed to the court that eyewitnesses were safe from threats. He characterized this legal move as a direct assault on judicial processes, arguing that attempting to secure a favorable narrative before full testimonies are completed shows a stark erosion of democratic checks and balances. Both farming organizations concluded by issuing a joint warning against administrative high-handedness, promising to maintain their support for students, agrarian workers, and peaceful activists nationwide.
