New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, strongly criticized the removal of activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest site on Saturday, describing the police action as wrong. The Congress party condemned the early morning operation, characterizing it as a direct stain on the country’s democratic principles and constitutional values. In a statement shared on social media, Gandhi targeted the core philosophy of the current administration, alleging that the central government functions entirely on the tenets of falsehood and violence.
Gandhi highlighted that paper leaks, skyrocketing education costs, and tragic student suicides represent critical challenges that directly threaten the future of India’s youth. He asserted that no amount of administrative pressure or physical force would succeed in silencing the students of the nation, nor would it deter those who believe in their cause from continuously raising these pivotal issues. The political backlash erupted immediately after Delhi Police intercepted the demonstration, shifting Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital as his non-violent hunger strike extended into its third week.
New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma confirmed the relocation, stating that the action was carried out strictly in compliance with prior Delhi High Court directives and expert medical advice concerning the activist’s rapidly deteriorating health indicators. While law enforcement officials maintained that they exercised maximum physical restraint, representatives from the Cockroach Janta Party alleged a heavy-handed crackdown. The political group shared visual evidence showing the frail activist being wrapped in white sheets and carried away from the stage, calling the incident a national shame. Wangchuk had been fasting alongside student activists since late June to demand accountability and the resignation of the Union Education Minister over alleged irregularities in national examinations
