Telangana: A sub-inspector of the Telangana Police has landed in controversy after a video allegedly showing his six-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter driving a vehicle surfaced on social media. The incident has prompted immediate disciplinary and legal action from the state police.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police confirmed that a criminal case has been registered against the child’s guardian, identified as Pujari Thirupathi, for allegedly allowing a minor to operate a motor vehicle within the limits of Narsingi Police Station.
According to the police, the case has been filed under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 184 and 180 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which deal with dangerous driving and permitting an unauthorised person to drive a vehicle. Officials said the matter remains under investigation.
Soon after the video gained widespread attention online, Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand directed the Cyberabad Police Commissioner to take strict departmental action against the officer concerned.
In a statement, the DGP instructed that the sub-inspector be placed under suspension pending inquiry and ordered a departmental investigation into what he described as an act of serious misconduct.
The police department has reiterated that allowing minors to drive is a punishable offence and poses a significant risk to public safety. Officials urged citizens to strictly follow traffic regulations and refrain from encouraging such practices, irrespective of the circumstances.
The viral clip has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users questioning how a serving police officer could allegedly permit a child to drive despite being responsible for enforcing the law.
Authorities have indicated that further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the departmental inquiry.
