Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced major organisational changes in three northern states, appointing new state presidents for Punjab, Haryana and Delhi as the party intensifies preparations for upcoming Assembly elections.
In Punjab, senior leader Kewal Singh Dhillon has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the state BJP unit. The announcement comes at a politically significant time as parties begin strengthening their structures ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

The appointments were officially communicated through a letter issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh following approval from party leadership headed by BJP national president Nitin Naveen.

Alongside Punjab, the BJP also appointed Archana Gupta as the new Haryana BJP president and Harsh Malhotra to lead the party organisation in Delhi.

Dhillon replaces outgoing Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, whose tenure was nearing completion. Party insiders indicate that Jakhar is expected to continue playing a prominent role in shaping the BJP’s campaign strategy for the 2027 state elections.
A veteran politician from Barnala district, the 75-year-old Dhillon previously served as MLA from Barnala for two consecutive terms between 2007 and 2017. He later joined the BJP in 2022 after parting ways with the Congress following the party’s electoral setback in Punjab.
After joining the BJP, Dhillon was appointed vice-president of the Punjab unit and gradually emerged as one of the prominent Sikh faces within the party’s state leadership.
Political observers believe the BJP’s decision reflects its broader strategy to strengthen outreach among Sikh voters and expand its influence across Punjab ahead of the next Assembly battle.
