Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough against organised crime, the Punjab Police’s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has arrested Aditya alias Makhan, a key shooter involved in the murder of Kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh alias Rana Balachauria, from Agartala in Tripura.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the arrest was made during a coordinated operation involving central agencies and Tripura Police as part of the state’s ongoing crackdown on gangsters under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Aditya, a resident of Amritsar, has a significant criminal record, with at least 14 cases registered against him, including charges of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, armed robbery, NDPS violations and offences under the Arms Act.

The arrest comes months after police had apprehended two other shooters—Karan Pathak alias Karan Defaulter and Tarandeep Singh—along with their associate Akashdeep from Howrah in West Bengal.

Rana Balachauria was shot dead during a Kabaddi tournament in village Sohana, SAS Nagar, on December 15, 2025. Police said the killing was executed as part of a planned operation allegedly directed by foreign-based handlers.

“With this arrest, all accused involved in this sensational case have now been apprehended,” DGP Yadav said, adding that Aditya had been absconding and evading arrest until now.

Additional Director General of Police (AGTF) Promod Ban said the arrest followed specific intelligence inputs regarding the accused’s location. Acting on the tip-off, an interstate operation codenamed “Shadow Hunt” was launched, and a team led by DSP Rajan Parminder Singh was sent to Agartala, where the accused was successfully apprehended.

Police said a case in connection with the murder was registered at Sohana police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.

Further investigation is underway.
