Chandigarh, May 3, 2026: Punjab has registered another significant milestone in its fiscal performance, recording a notable surge in revenue collections from Value Added Tax (VAT) and Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT) during April 2026. The development is being seen as a strong indicator of improved tax administration and growing economic activity in the state.

Sharing details of the achievement, Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the state has secured approximately ₹265 crore in additional revenue through VAT and PSDT combined. He emphasized that this financial boost has been made possible due to enhanced monitoring systems, stricter enforcement mechanisms, and a transparent tax administration framework.

The Minister noted that the government has been consistently working towards strengthening revenue generation while maintaining fairness and ease for taxpayers. He added that the focus is not only on increasing collections but also on ensuring a balanced and trustworthy taxation system.

VAT Collections Register Strong Growth, Reflecting Economic Momentum

Elaborating on the performance of VAT, Harpal Singh Cheema stated that the state has recorded an impressive 23.28% growth in VAT collections for April 2026. This growth has resulted in an absolute increase of around ₹230 crore for the state exchequer, marking a substantial improvement compared to previous periods.

He said that this growth reflects sustained improvements in tax compliance, better administrative practices, and enhanced monitoring mechanisms. The use of data-driven strategies and regular inspections has played a key role in curbing tax evasion and ensuring higher compliance among businesses.

The Minister further highlighted that the increase in VAT collections is also indicative of strengthening economic activities in the state. A stable and growing market environment has contributed to higher tax revenues, reinforcing the government’s efforts to build a robust financial system.

He added that the department is continuing to refine its strategies to maintain this upward trajectory. Officials have been directed to further strengthen monitoring systems and ensure that tax collection processes remain efficient and transparent.

PSDT Growth and Enforcement Measures Strengthen Revenue Base

Alongside VAT, Punjab State Development Tax (PSDT) has also shown encouraging growth during the same period. According to the Finance Minister, PSDT collections have increased by 20.43%, resulting in an additional ₹35 crore in revenue for the state.

He attributed this growth to rigorous enforcement measures and improved monitoring within the sector. The government has implemented targeted campaigns to identify and address instances of tax evasion, which have yielded positive results.

The Minister stated that the adoption of technology, including data analytics and intelligence-based operations, has significantly improved the efficiency of the taxation system. These tools have enabled the department to detect irregularities more effectively and take timely action.

Harpal Singh Cheema reiterated that the government remains committed to maintaining a fair balance—providing full support and facilitation to honest taxpayers while taking strict action against those who attempt to evade taxes.

He assured that such measures will continue in the future to safeguard government revenue and strengthen the state’s fiscal position. The emphasis, he said, will remain on building a transparent, accountable, and efficient taxation system.

Step Towards Stronger Financial Stability

The Finance Minister подчеркed that the combined growth in VAT and PSDT is a clear reflection of Punjab’s improving financial health and disciplined governance. He said that the government is determined to continue implementing reforms that enhance revenue generation and support long-term economic growth.

He also assured citizens that the government is committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations, ensuring that taxpayers do not face unnecessary difficulties.

Experts believe that consistent growth in tax revenues will provide the state with greater financial resources to invest in development projects and public welfare initiatives.

With sustained efforts in enforcement, technology adoption, and taxpayer facilitation, Punjab is steadily moving towards a stronger and more resilient economic framework.
