New Delhi: India and Ecuador have taken a significant step toward deepening their bilateral relationship following the conclusion of a productive two-day visit to New Delhi by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero. The primary highlight of the visit was the initiation of formal discussions regarding a potential Preferential Trade Agreement, which aims to significantly enhance trade volumes between the two nations. During high-level talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, both representatives explored a strategic roadmap for this agreement, with a specific focus on scaling up Indian pharmaceutical exports and securing supply chain partnerships for critical minerals like copper and gold, which are essential for global energy transitions.
Diplomatic engagement extended beyond trade, as Minister Sommerfeld also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to reaffirm a shared commitment to cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, and digital technology. A notable outcome of these discussions was Ecuador’s formal decision to join the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance, demonstrating a shared vision for climate action and biodiversity conservation. To support local development, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Quick Impact Projects, under which India will provide a grant of up to 12 crore rupees over the next five years to support socio-economic welfare in Ecuador.
The healthcare sector served as another vital pillar of the visit, with Sommerfeld and Union Health Minister JP Nadda discussing regulatory cooperation and affordable medical solutions. Ecuador is currently considering the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia, a move that would streamline the integration of Indian medicines into the Ecuadorian market. To better understand India’s successful public welfare initiatives, the Foreign Minister visited a Jan Aushadhi Kendra at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, expressing interest in replicating India’s low-cost medicine distribution systems in her home country.
Furthermore, the visit highlighted Ecuador’s interest in India’s robust Digital Public Infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI-like payment frameworks, as well as potential collaborations in artificial intelligence. This diplomatic momentum follows the establishment of a resident Indian embassy in Quito in November 2025, marking a transformative period for India’s engagement with Latin America. As both nations move toward formalising these new agreements, the partnership reflects a growing alignment on economic growth, sustainable development, and technological innovation.
