Washington, D.C.: US President Donald Trump has reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a key objective of the United States, while expressing optimism that the ongoing conflict could be nearing its conclusion.
Speaking to reporters, Trump described the US campaign involving Iran as a “very important excursion,” asserting that Washington’s actions were aimed at ensuring Tehran does not develop nuclear weapons.
“I started the very important excursion into the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was a very important excursion because they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
The US President also suggested that the conflict may not continue for much longer, saying he believes the situation is approaching its final stages.
“I think the war is going to end soon. I don’t think they can go much longer,” he remarked, without providing further details on the military or diplomatic developments behind his assessment.
Trump’s latest comments come amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the US administration maintaining pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme while also signalling its preference for a negotiated resolution to the crisis.
No official response to Trump’s latest remarks had been issued by Iranian authorities at the time of reporting.
