New Delhi: A full emergency was declared at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday morning after an IndiGo flight reported a mid-air engine issue while approaching the national capital.

According to initial information, flight 6E 579, operated by a Boeing 737-800 and carrying 161 passengers and crew, developed a technical problem in one of its engines during its journey from Visakhapatnam to Delhi. Authorities declared an emergency at 10:39 am as the aircraft neared landing.

Despite the scare, the aircraft, which had sufficient fuel for extended operation, was guided safely to Runway 28 and landed without incident at 10:54 am.

Airport officials confirmed that all emergency protocols were activated, with rescue and firefighting teams deployed on standby as a precaution. No hazardous materials were on board.

In a statement, IndiGo said a technical snag was detected shortly before landing, following which the pilots requested priority clearance in line with standard operating procedures. The airline confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and is currently undergoing inspection and maintenance.

Passengers were assisted after landing by airline staff and the Delhi International Airport Limited operations team. No injuries were reported.

The incident comes at a time when aviation safety remains under close watch, with regulators continuing to monitor airline operations and emergency preparedness.
