Doha (Qatar): Qatar’s Ministry of Defence confirmed on Sunday, March 22, 2026, that six people were killed after a military helicopter crashed in the nation’s territorial waters. The incident, which occurred during a routine duty mission on Saturday, has been attributed to a “technical malfunction.” Specialized search and rescue teams have recovered six bodies from the Gulf, while intensive operations remain underway to locate one final missing crew member.
The Ministry later identified the deceased as a mix of Qatari and Turkish personnel. The victims include three members of the Qatar Armed Forces: Captain (Pilot) Mubarak Salem Daway al-Marri, Sergeant Fahad Hadi Ghanem al-khayarin, and Corporal Mohammed Maher Mohammed. Also among the dead are Major Sinan Taştekin from the Qatar-Turkey Joint Forces and two Turkish civilian collaborators, Suleiman Cemra Kahraman and Ismail Anas Can. Search efforts continue for the missing Captain (Pilot) Saeed Nasser Samekh of the Qatar Armed Forces.
The crash occurs against a backdrop of severe regional instability, as Qatar has recently faced multiple missile and drone strikes on its energy infrastructure, including the Ras Laffan LNG hub, amid the broader conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition. However, Qatari officials emphasized that there is currently no indication that the crash was the result of hostile action. The United Arab Emirates and other regional partners have expressed their “solidarity and sincere condolences” to both Qatar and Türkiye following the tragic loss.
